The LORD’s cup for Jesus

And He withdrew from them about a [stone’s] [throw], and [He knelt down] and began to pray,

42 saying, “[Father], if You are willing, remove this [cup] from Me; yet not My [will], but Yours be done.”

43 Now an [angel] from [heaven] appeared to Him, strengthening Him.

44 And being in [agony] He was praying very fervently; and His [sweat] became like [drops] of [blood], falling down upon the [ground].

And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. ()

43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. (Luke 22:41-44)
And He was saying, “Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.” ()
And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.” (Matt 26:39)

Jesus willingly takes the cup of fiery wrath

The cup of wrath the LORD had for the nations.
For thus says the Lord, “Behold, those who were not sentenced to drink the cup will certainly drink it, and are you the one who will be completely acquitted? You will not be acquitted, but you will certainly drink it. ()
But [Jesus] answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the [cup] that I am about to drink?” They *said to Him, “We are able.” ()

The church drinks the cup of blessing

Is not the [cup] of [blessing] which we bless a [sharing] in the [blood] of [Christ]? Is not the b[bread] which we break a [sharing] in the [body] of [Christ]? ()
We drink a cup that symbolizes the literal shame, rejection, punishment, chastisement and death of our Savior. He took the cup we deserved and replaced it with a cup of blessing.

He made Him who knew no [sin] to be [sin] on our behalf, so that we might become the [righteousness] of [God] in Him.
